This situation reveals a significant conflict of interest as the US feels like what it does is best for the world, but clearly other countries don’t feel the same way. According to one expert, 9/11 was the first display of opposition to American economic and military dominance and 9/11 happened because of US promotion of globalization and its own ideals (Munck, 2010).

These policies caused hostility toward the US and the lack of overall support. An illustration of such opposition to American policies is how the international community bailed on the US after the Iraq war because they didn’t consider the war right or legal. In addition, several other countries dislike many of America’s policies enforced abroad and the imposition of United States’ culture (Feigenbaum, 2011). While some people argue that increased trade results in more cooperation between countries, it also causes an increased amount of competition in both economics and politics one source describes this paradox saying, “As things stand then, we have an international order in which competition exists alongside high levels of cooperation between the major states, led by the US” this competition leads to conflict as corporations fight for resources and countries fight for their sovereignty ( Kiely, 2006). The United States has become increasingly dependent on other states because of increased global trade.

Thus, competition is increasing for the United States and the United States is losing (Kaplinsky, 2001).

Meanwhile, the rest of the world is beginning to have the same skills and requirements as American workers, since they are becoming more educated as a workforce. With other countries playing an integral role in the production of American goods, America itself becomes more dependent on other countries, leaving American success or failure up to global swings in the market. Because American citizens are typically not willing to work for less pay and employers are constantly seeking to maximize their profits, more jobs are being outsourced to other countries. Thus, American citizens must become more efficient and do more work for the same or less pay. Since more and more countries are participating in trade, the markets expand which in turn increases competition and limits the amount of trading the US can do. Increased Economic Dependence and Outsourcing JobsĬhina and India, among others, enter world market by offering a labor force that is willing to work for low wages if the United States is to compete, then American employers would also have to lower the wages of American workers. In addition, globalization has to fight against anti-globalization movements and the negative opinions of many American citizens. Some of the problems facing America due to globalization are increased economic dependence on other countries, outsourcing jobs, heightened international conflict, increasing the national wealth disparity, negative environmental impacts and significantly changed American culture. Thus globalization proves to have abundant potential to affect America and the world in positive ways, yet it struggles to reach its potential due to the imbalances which corporatization and the capitalist system implement (Skliar, 2009). Also globalization is increasing the rapid development of new technology has the potential to better the quality of life for individuals worldwide. In addition, global trade can cause the motivation for international cooperation and interdependence which is the forerunner of global peace (Rivoli, 2009). For example, it would require $13 billion per year to give everyone in the world basic nutrition whereas America and Europe spend $13 billion on pet food per year. Globalization provides us with the ability to supply the people of the world with the basic level of economic and educational resources necessary to promote a decent global standard of living. The development and progress which globalization is capable of creating has great “emancipatory potential” to better the livelihoods of Americans citizens as well as the global community. America and its citizens have benefitted from globalization in numerous ways, such that overall it can be considered a “good” thing.

Is globalization a “good” thing for Americans and the United States? How has globalization impacted the United States and American citizens?
